Matt’s breakthrough came at a Love Music Hate Racism gig in May 2007. Following a few more years of making highly acclaimed albums with Skint and Demoralised, and being lauded as the next big thing in many publications and by some of the country’s best DJs, Matt continued performing spoken word slots at major festivals.

Having concentrated on music for six years Matt found himself performing at poetry events. In 2015, he took his début solo spoken word show ‘Matt Abbott is Skint & Demoralised’ to the Edinburgh Fringe. The opening night sold out and received 5* in Broadway Baby, and the week’s run was a huge success.

Since then, Matt has shared a stage with a huge range of performers including Paul Weller, John Cooper Clarke, Kate Tempest, Florence + the Machine and Ken Loach. He was also one of three spoken word artists featured in a groundbreaking TV campaign for the Nationwide Building Society.

Matt is also involved with other charities and museums. He has visited ‘The Jungle’ refugee camp in Calais twice, and campaigned for several issues including homelessness, anti-racism and the refugee crisis. He is the official Poet-in-Residence at the National Coal Mining Museum. He is also an ambassador for CRIBS International.
